Reproofing Your Waterproof Jacket: When and How to Do It

Is your riding coat no longer keeping you dry? Learn when and how to reproof it to restore its waterproof protection and extend its lifespan.

Is your waterproof riding coat starting to feel damp in the rain? Over time, mud, washing and regular wear can reduce water repellency. In this guide, we explain how to tell when your coat needs reproofing, the best way to do it and how to keep your equestrian outerwear working effectively for longer.

How often should I reproof my jacket?

Most waterproof jackets need reproofing every 6-12 months, depending on how often they are worn and washed. Riders who use their coat daily, hack in heavy rain or frequently machine wash it may need to reproof it more often. We recommend that you reproof your coat every time you wash it to ensure that the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating stays intact.

Does my waterproof riding coat need reproofing?

Your riding coat likely needs reproofing if you notice:

  • Water stops beading and starts soaking into the outer fabric

  • The coat feels heavier or damp in rain

  • You feel colder even though the insulation hasn’t changed

This doesn’t mean the membrane has failed; it’s often just that the DWR coating needs restoring.

Do I need to wash my coat before reproofing?

Yes, you should always wash your coat before applying the reproofer, as dirt, mud, sweat and horse hair can block the fabric pores and prevent the waterproof treatment from bonding properly. Washing first helps the new coating spread evenly and perform effectively.

How do I reproof an EQUIDRY coat?

To reproof an EQUIDRY coat:

  1. Machine wash the coat using a detergent designed for waterproof clothing

  2. Apply a waterproof coat wash-in reproofer, following the product instructions

  3. If applying a spray treatment, focus on high-exposure areas like shoulders and seams

  4. Allow the coat to air dry or tumble dry on a low setting, checking regularly

  5. Test whether water beads off the coat once it has fully dried

Always follow the specific care label guidance on the product and reproofing treatment for best results.

Does reproofing a coat actually work?

Yes, reproofing is very effective when the coat’s waterproof membrane is still intact. It restores the outer DWR layer, helping water bead and roll off rather than soaking into the fabric. This improves rain protection, breathability and comfort, which is particularly important for long rides or days spent on the yard.

Is it worth reproofing my riding coat or should I replace it?

Reproofing is usually worth it if:

  • The coat still fits well and has no major tears

  • Waterproofing has reduced gradually rather than suddenly failed

  • The lining and seams remain in good condition

You may need to replace the coat if the membrane is damaged, seams are leaking badly or the fabric has worn thin after years of heavy use.

What reproofing wash is safe to use on my waterproof coat?

A specialist two-stage reproofing treatment designed for waterproof clothing, such as Grangers Performance Wash and Repel, is the safest option. This will clean the garment without damaging the breathable membrane and help to restore the DWR finish that allows rain to bead and roll off.

You should avoid standard detergents, fabric conditioners and biological powders, as these can strip waterproof coatings or clog the fabric’s pores, reducing breathability and rain protection.

Do I need to tumble dry my coat to activate the reproofing treatment?

It is vital that after washing, you give your garment time to fully dry. The safest option is hanging the coat up to air dry in a warm, well-ventilated room, but you can also tumble dry EQUIDRY coats on a low heat setting as long as you regularly check the garment to avoid overheating.
