Think of choosing your EQUIDRY coat a bit like choosing a turnout rug for your horse. On a mild, wet day, you want protection from the rain without any warmth. When winter arrives, you want something that keeps you comfortable through the cold as well.
That’s why we’ve created our EQUIDRY Thermal Rating (ETR) guide. It puts our oversized coats and our more fitted styles on one scale, from ETR 1 to ETR 5, so you can compare the warmth you can expect from each.
ETR 1 Your Rain Sheet
Nimbus · Varsha · Frontier · Storm Smock
Think of the rain sheet you reach for when it’s pouring down but too warm for a filled rug. ETR 1 coats are made for those milder, very wet days: waterproof protection without built-in insulation. They’re highly waterproof and breathable, helping heat and moisture escape while keeping the rain out.
Choose ETR 1 if you tend to run warm, want a lightweight coat for active days, or prefer to add your own layers when it gets colder.
ETR 2 Your Ripstop Lightweight Turnout
Evolution Mesh · Shortie Mesh · Aura · Nevada
Picture a lightweight turnout with a tough, ripstop outer and no fill: it keeps the rain and harsh wind off your horse without adding insulation. That’s the idea behind ETR 2. These coats give you durable weather protection and a more sheltered feel, while leaving you to decide how much warmth to wear underneath.
They’re a useful choice for changeable weather, long walks, yard jobs and days when you need protection from the elements but don’t want to overheat.
ETR 3 Your Medium Weight Turnout
Evolution Thin Fleece · Shortie Thin Fleece · Bronte · Iris
This is the rug you reach for when the weather starts to turn. ETR 3 adds some warmth to the weather protection, making it a versatile choice through autumn and into winter.
The combination of high waterproofing and breathability is designed to keep rain out while allowing moisture from inside the coat to escape. That matters when you’re moving between riding, yard jobs and standing still: you want to feel dry and comfortable, rather than clammy inside your coat.
If you’re choosing between an oversized Evolution or Shortie and one of our fitted styles, this rating shows where they sit together for warmth.
ETR 4 Your Medium-to-Heavy Turnout
Freya Jacket and Trousers · All-in-One Jumpsuit
Think of the turnout you reach for when the temperature drops and you need more than a waterproof outer layer. The Freya jacket and trousers are both insulated, giving you warmth as well as protection from the rain. Wear them together for full coverage, or separately when you only need one or the other.
The All-in-One offers a different way to get that coverage: a single piece that protects you from top to toe. Both options sit at ETR 4, so the choice comes down to whether you prefer the flexibility of a jacket and trousers or the ease of one garment.
Your layers underneath will still make a difference, especially if you’re standing around at the yard rather than riding.
ETR 5 Your Heavyweight Winter Turnout
All Rounder Original · Evolution Thick Fleece · Parka · Thora · Talia · Tor
This is the heavyweight rug you save for winter’s coldest, wettest days. ETR 5 brings together the warmest coats in our range, from thick Sherpa fleece and quilted linings to our waterproof puffers.
Choose this rating when you want warmth built into your coat, especially for early starts, long days at the yard and time spent standing in the cold.
Which Rating Is Right For You?
Start with the weather, then think about what you’ll be doing. A brisk ride, a long dog walk and an afternoon standing at a show ground can feel very different at the same temperature. How warm you naturally run and what you wear underneath matter too.
Choose a lower ETR if you want a lighter coat and prefer to control your warmth with layers. Choose a higher ETR if you want more warmth built into the garment.
Every EQUIDRY has been designed with riders and real wet weather in mind. The thermal ratings help you find the level of warmth that works for your days outdoors and helps you compare an oversized EQUIDRY with a fitted style without having to guess which will feel warmer.
