When choosing a riding coat, you’ll often see the terms waterproof, water-repellent and water-resistant. While they might sound similar, they offer different levels of protection. So, what’s the difference and which one do you need?
What Is Waterproof?
A waterproof coat or jacket is designed to stop water from penetrating the fabric, even in heavy or prolonged rain.
EQUIDRY coats have a 20,000mm waterproof rating, providing a high level of protection whether you’re riding, doing yard jobs or getting caught out in a downpour. The collection offers a range of styles to suit different riders and conditions, from the Shortie and Evolution in the oversized collection to fitted long coats such as the Bronte and Aura, as well as lightweight jackets including the Varsha and Nimbus.
Best for: Heavy rain, long rides and days when you need reliable protection from the weather.

What Is Water-Repellent?
A water-repellent gilet or coat is designed to make water bead and roll off the surface rather than soak into the fabric. It offers a lighter level of protection than waterproof clothing, making it a good choice for light showers, changeable weather or layering when you don’t need full waterproof protection.
For example, the Tamar Gilet provides a water-repellent outer layer that’s ideal for unpredictable days when you want some protection from light rain without wearing a full waterproof coat. EQUIDRY also offers water-repellent base layers, zip-up tops and leggings, giving you lightweight options that can be worn on their own or layered depending on the weather.
Best for: Light rain, changeable weather and everyday riding when you don't need a fully waterproof coat.

What Is Water-Resistant?
A water-resistant coat offers less protection than both waterproof and water-repellent coats.
They can resist a small amount of moisture, but aren’t designed to deal with heavy or prolonged rain. In simple terms, it might be fine for a quick dash to the yard or a very light shower, but it isn't something you should rely on to keep you dry in wet weather.
This is the biggest difference between water-repellent and water-resistant. Water-repellent coats are specifically designed to encourage water to bead and roll off the fabric, while water-resistant coats simply provide a limited barrier against moisture.
EQUIDRY does not offer water-resistant coats. Instead, the collection focuses on fully waterproof coats for riders who need dependable protection from the British weather.
Best for: Light showers and short periods outdoors.
Which One Do You Need?
Consider the conditions you’re most likely to be riding and working in, and choose the level of protection that best suits your needs.
Heavy or prolonged rain? Choose a 20,000mm waterproof EQUIDRY coat.
Light showers or changeable weather? A water-repellent gilet, base layer, zip-up or leggings can be a great option.
Looking at a water-resistant coat? Be aware that it offers considerably less protection and isn't designed for the prolonged wet weather that riders can experience.
With EQUIDRY, the choice is simple: fully waterproof coats for serious wet weather, plus water-repellent layers for lighter and more changeable conditions.
